Majestic Maine Coon

History

The Origin of the Maine Coon are unclear, but the rumor has it that the Queen of France Marie Antoinette was plotting her escape in 1793 with the help of Captain Samuel Clough. The Queen sent all of her prized possessions to the ship ahead of her. Among those possessions were six stunning long haired cats...Alas the Queen did not make her boat to America...but the cats did...to Wiscasset, Maine where the mated with the local cat population evolving into the Maine Coon cat that we have today.

Description

The Maine Coon is a large breed of cat and can reach weights anywhere between 13 and 18 lbs. at maturity (around 3 years of age). They stand between 10 to 16 in. tall, and get as long as 40 in. including the tail. The Main Coon is a medium to long haired cat coming in all colors, but the most popular is the Tabby. On occasion you will see a ticked or Siamese pointed Maine Coon, but these are not acceptable by breed standards.

Temperament

The Maine Coon is a very amiable feline that will do well around the family dog, loving to the family and reserved with strangers. Very intelligent and a bit on the independent side the Maine Coon is a great addition to the family getting along well with children. Males lean more toward playfulness than the females who have a bit more decorum. For the right family the Maine Coon makes a fantastic pet.
